China, now the world’s second largest economy, is going to play an increasingly substantial role in multilateral economic organizations and mechanisms.

After a period of pause and observation, its strategy is evolving towards more active participation in the institutions of which it is a member, in particular the World Trade Organization and the Bretton Woods institutions more generally. This is all part of its pragmatic approach which is fundamentally based on defending its national interests.
