Crises in Iran’s East flank heighten vulnerabilities in the Islamic Republic as well as its possibilities of action in the area. In Afghanistan, Iran tries to avoid instability and to restrain the American influence in its borders. As for Pakistan, cooperation between both states is limited and determined by the Baluchistan issue, an irredentist minority existing in the three states. Teheran’s actual room for manoeuvre is related to the current nuclear crisis.Mohammad-Reza Djalili, Doctor in political and diplomatic sciences of the Université libre de Bruxelles, is a Professor at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (Geneva). He also taught at the University Paris II and the University of Teheran. Clément Therme, Ph.D student at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) and at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, is a Junior Research Fellow at the Centre Moyen-Orient/Maghreb (MOM) at Ifri.
