La Chine, puissance financière mondiale ?
Dongfeng's acquisition of a stake in PSA Peugeot-Citroën, Fosun's purchase of Portugal's leading insurance company, Lenovo's acquisition of Motorola and IBM's low-end server business - 2014 has gotten off to a spectacular start for Chinese investors. Their appetite for natural resources is well known, as is China's status as America's largest foreign creditor and its central role in the redistribution of savings around the world. Now we're seeing the extent to which Chinese companies are globalizing. China is not just exporting manufactured goods, but capital as well. The leading industrial power and biggest exporter on the planet, will it now add another title to its list of achievements and progressively assert itself as the world's dominant financial power? The dramatic rise in its foreign investments would suggest so, such is the pace of this financial expansion. But given the state of its financial system and the minor role played by its currency on the international stage, China has a long way to go before it can make any such claim.
