Abstract:

The Bandung conference had tremendous international repercussions. It originated in various anticolonial movements, the oldest of which date from the 19th century, but also in a political environment specific to the mid-fifties, when the Third World was becoming the major issue in East-West rivalry. The movement’s failure is directly connected to the development strategies that were adopted and to the authoritarianism of the principal leaders. Looking back, one aim of the Afro-Asian movement appears to have been to capitalize various forms of income, hence its demanding tone.
