Abstract

What does a foreigner make of French diplomacy? The Indian view makes it possible to identify, on the international scene, a certain French individualism manifesting itself, since de Gaulle, by demands for autonomy –particularly with regard to the United States in defence and strategic matters– the triumph over national policy through European construction –in which the economy has won over the military– and demands for a multipolar world. A similar logic exists between Indian and French policy in security, armament, and nuclear deterrence strategy, even if India does not hesitate to criticise France for contradicting its independent stance through its actions.
