The Galaxy of Left-wing Parties in Romania
Abstract:
The paper sets out a typology of the Romanian political parties which form part of a movement that claims to be left-wing, but which hide behind the term «centre» and nevertheless try to forge a more or less social-democratic programme. Based on first-hand sources, this study illustrates the cul-de-sacs of the post-communist era: vague plans for society, a breakdown of identity, a loss of credibility with the voters, leadership battles and the impossibility offorging stable, coherent alliances. Worse still, they are all obliged to take upthe nationalist challenge by incorporating it into their objectives.
