France’s and Turkey’s divergent strategies in the EastMed have direct consequences on the European Strategic Autonomy, according to Antoine Michon. Both presidents have used their rivalry in the region to advance their own political agendas. For Emmanuel Macron, using Turkey as a ‘bugbear’ is a way to push forward the European Strategic Autonomy. However, the politicization of their rivalry also fits into Erdogan’s domestic and regional strategy.
