Integrating refugees: are small towns inventing a model for tomorrow?

Matthieu Tardis, Research Fellow at the Centre for Migration and Citizenship at the French Institute for International Relations (Ifri), describes how small towns and rural areas are welcoming refugees and enabling them to settle.

2015 represented a major turning point in the reception of migrants and refugees in Europe on at least two counts. On the one hand, owing to the large numbers of arrivals and the intensity of the political and media debate, the question went beyond the scope of the immigration authorities and of the associations providing assistance to migrants, and spread to a wider public space. Citizens, companies, local authorities and cities all reflected on the role that they could play in assisting the refugees and migrants.
